Ancient Structures on the Moon

The assertion that artificial structures exist on the Moon predates the Space Age, but gained particular momentum in the years following the Apollo program (1969–1972). A number of researchers — most prominently George Leonard and Fred Steckling in the 1970s, followed later by Richard C. Hoagland — began scrutinizing publicly released NASA photographs and claimed to detect geometric anomalies inconsistent with natural geological processes. Features described variously as 'the Shard,' 'the Tower,' 'the Blair Cuspids,' and 'the Castle' were presented as evidence of construction, megastructures, or at minimum, objects requiring serious investigation. It must be stated clearly: none of these claims has been validated by professional planetary scientists, and in each case where formal analysis has been conducted, natural explanations — pareidolia, photographic artifacts, image compression, and ordinary lunar geology — have been offered and widely accepted within the scientific community.

The phenomenon draws on a broader tradition of anomaly hunting in planetary imagery, a practice that gained widespread popular attention following the 'Face on Mars' controversy of the late 1970s and 1980s. In that episode, a mesa in the Cydonia region of Mars was photographed by the Viking 1 orbiter and subsequently interpreted by some researchers as a sculpted humanoid face. Higher-resolution imagery obtained by the Mars Global Surveyor in 1998 and again in 2001 revealed the feature to be an unremarkable natural mesa. The pattern repeated on the Moon: as imaging technology improved — particularly with NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), operational since 2009, delivering the highest-resolution lunar surface imagery ever obtained — none of the claimed structures survived closer scrutiny as anything other than geological formations, shadows, or photographic noise.

The cultural appetite for lunar anomalies is nonetheless sociologically significant. It draws from at least three distinct streams of thought: (1) a general distrust of government and space agency transparency, amplified by documented programs of institutional secrecy (see: NASA cover-up claims); (2) the ancient astronaut tradition, which holds that nonhuman intelligences have interacted with Earth and its environs throughout antiquity; and (3) a folkloric inheritance of lunar mythology stretching across virtually every major human civilization, in which the Moon occupies a charged symbolic and cosmological role. These streams have converged in popular media, internet forums, and self-published research to produce a body of claims that, while lacking evidentiary foundation, reflects genuine anxieties about what humanity does and does not know about its nearest celestial neighbor.

It is worth noting that the Moon does present legitimate scientific mysteries — the origins of transient lunar phenomena (TLP), certain anomalies in the lunar interior detected by Apollo seismic instruments, and the still-debated question of how the Moon formed — that are subjects of active, peer-reviewed scientific inquiry. These genuine open questions are entirely separate from the claim that ancient artificial structures exist on the lunar surface, and conflating them represents a rhetorical strategy rather than a scientific argument. The archive treats these threads separately, while acknowledging that the human desire to find meaning and pattern in the vast indifference of space is itself a phenomenon worthy of serious study.
