Dead Internet Theory

The theory known as Dead Internet Theory crystallized in public discourse around 2021, when a long-form post on the imageboard forum Agora Road's Macintosh Cafe circulated widely and was subsequently amplified across Reddit, 4chan, and independent blogs. The core assertion is arresting in its simplicity: at some undetermined point — proponents often suggest somewhere between 2016 and 2019 — the open, chaotic, human-generated internet effectively died, replaced by a curated simulacrum populated by bots, AI-generated content, and algorithmically recycled material. In this framing, the majority of the social media posts, comments, trending topics, and even viral controversies that users encounter are not organic expressions of human thought but manufactured outputs designed to shape perception, manufacture consent, or simply monetize engagement. The theory exists on a spectrum from the empirically grounded — bot traffic is demonstrably real and substantial — to the conspiratorial extreme, where shadowy coordinating entities are alleged to have deliberately engineered the death of authentic online culture.
